What is a dam?

A dam is a structure built to obstruct water or an underground waterway and create a reservoir. Reservoirs support more than flood protection: they provide water for irrigation, domestic use, industry, livestock, and navigation. Hydropower can work alongside dams to generate electricity, while other control structures help manage and distribute water safely. At its core, a dam stores and manages water for communities and sustainable development.
